WHAT ARE SULFATES?

Sulfates and sulfonates are surfactants or cleansing agents. Sulfates are a combination of molecules that help attract oil and water from the surface.

TYPES OF SULFATES

Sulfates are typically found in personal products such as skin care, toothpaste or hair care as well as cleaning products. Look out for these two in your ingredient list:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

WHY ARE SULFATES USED IN SKINCARE OR HAIRCARE

Sulfates are used to create super-sudsy foam and create a lather, and also to remove dirt and oils from your skin and hair.

ARE SULFATES BAD FOR YOUR SKIN?

The biggest issue with sulfates is that they can cause irritation to your skin, scalp or eyes. Sulfates can often dry out your skin as it strips the natural oils and compromises your protective barrier. Your skin could become dry, itchy and irritated. It can also disrupt your skins pH levels which help to balance your oil production. You can learn more about that here. Sensitive skin types should try and avoid sulfates as they are known to cause irritation.
