We’ve all wondered whether switching from chemical based to natural and organic skincare can cause breakouts or what is called skin purging, so we asked skincare specialist Nousha Salimi to answer our questions.
Q. What is skin purging and what does it look like?
A: Skin purging is when your skin is releasing toxins through the pores and it can manifest as redness, acne, blackheads and clogged pores.
Q. What causes skin purging to occur?
A: It usually lasts 5-7 days and can come from things like doing deep peels, using new products that contain antioxidants or detoxing from chemical skincare products. Blockages in the skin are common from not cleansing off makeup properly or not exfoliating enough and creating buildup. Changing up any skin care routine and adding in different products can increase your chance of having a breakout or purge.
Skin purging is also a way for your body to show that it is inflamed and there could be other things outside of your products. Such as a poor diet, eating high inflammatory foods like sugar and dairy, drinking alcohol and not drinking enough water for your body weight.
Q. What is the best way to treat skin purging?
A: Every person varies with skin purging and how their body releases toxins but sometimes it can be unavoidable when switching from chemical skincare products to natural or organic skincare.
I always recommend exfoliating 2x a week with the KORA Organics Turmeric Face Mask. Getting a little vitamin D (with sunblock!), working out or sweating in an infrared sauna are a few ways I like to help my skin if it is detoxing. I also love juicing- ginger, turmeric and spinach with lemon is my favorite shot/mix to make if I’m searching for a good glow.
Finding what is right for your skin is partly trial and error but I always encourage my clients to use natural or organic skincare products in their daily routine.
