What motivated you to launch Sorette?
When I was expecting my daughter four years ago, I dealt with hormonal acne and instinctively reached for my go-to cleanser. A quick online search revealed a long list of chemicals to avoid during pregnancy, including retinol, benzoyl peroxide, high levels of salicylic acid, and some chemical sunscreens.
I felt a surge of anxiety and immediately contacted my doctor, panicked because I had been using retinol during my first six weeks of pregnancy. I felt completely caught off guard. While I knew to avoid things like alcohol, sushi, and deli meats, I had no clue about these chemicals commonly found in personal care items.
Given my background in the food and beverage consumer goods industry and being celiac, I was familiar with third-party certifications that help guide and protect consumers. It seemed unbelievable to me that during such a crucial life stage, there was no guidance for women on safer product choices. This revelation spurred me to create Sorette.
How do you ensure the safety of the products featured on Sorette?
All personal care products sold on Sorette must pass our stringent No-Go List of prohibited and restricted chemicals, developed in collaboration with toxicologists and supported by our Scientific Advisory Board. We compile existing regulatory lists from around the world that highlight hazardous and potentially hazardous chemicals for human health, as related to neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, carcinogens, and specifically reproductive and developmental health. For example, you will never find a product with retinol on Sorette; instead, you’ll find products with effective alternatives like Bakuchiol.
