We love Vitamin C—and as a team have been excited for the launch of our new Berry Bright Vitamin C Eye Cream. We share this enthusiasm with natural beauty therapists, Kylie Wells & Nousha Salimi—who’ve kindly penned their knowledge on the skin-loving vitamin as well.
We like to think of our new eye cream as being a Vitamin C infusion for the skin around the eye. To brighten, strengthen and firm the delicate tissue in order to minimize fine lines, wrinkles and puffiness with clinically active, Certified Organics. Vitamin C has long been revered for the high level of antioxidants it contains, which support skin to help improve the appearance of aging. This is great news for those with mature skin and anyone that has pigmentation concerns.
The question most people want to know when it comes to this ingredient is… is it stabilized? Meaning, is it protected in relation to sunlight, oxygenation and heat, to ensure it is giving health-boosting qualities? The answer for our KORA Organics Vitamin C hero’s is, yes!
We absolutely love this new blend as it delivers powerful results with an active 5.5% blend of stabilized Vitamin C from Absorbyl Glucoside, Kakadu Plum and Cloudberry.
We’ve first asked Kylie to share her wisdom on this wonder vitamin:
KORA: What is the importance of Vitamin C for the skin?
Kylie: Vitamin C plays a very important role in our skin. It is a nutrient that we need to form blood vessels, and to encourage new collagen in the skin. It is also worthy to note that our body cannot produce it naturally. Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid, helps to repair our body tissues and supports muscles. It plays many roles including the formation and structure of the skin barrier. It neutralises free radicals, making it an antioxidant, meaning it protects skin cells from damaging free radicles caused by UV exposure, maintaining your skins health. It is also vital to the skins’ healing process.
Being an acid derived from citrus fruits and many other colourful fruits and vegetables, it is packed with antioxidants that are known for brightening the skin and helping with hyperpigmentation and dark patches, along with fighting the signs of aging. It also helps to speed up collagen and elastin to keep the skin plump and firm. Without Vitamin C our skin becomes very thin and fragile resulting in a sluggish sallow, aging skin.
KORA: How does Vitamin C enhance collagen and elastin?
Kylie: Once digested it acts as sort of a glue that binds collagen fibres together, stimulating the biosynthesis of collagen. Vitamin C accelerates the production of both proteins: collagen and elastin, helping to improve the skins’ structure and elasticity when used topically used once or twice a day. This tricks your skin in believing it is younger and speeds up cell metabolism to strengthen your skin’s connective tissue.
It’s interesting to know, that a decrease in collagen production starts around the age of 25. At this age our skin cell turnover slows down from roughly once a month to 2-3 weeks. In our 40s this is 45-60 days, and over 60-90 days in our 50s and above.
KORA: How can we help our skin stay glowing longer, as we age?
Kylie: Follow a balanced diet consisting of Vitamin C packed foods, supplements and using Vitamin C serum and collagen mimicking skin care daily. Regular facials including microdermabrasion, LED and Micro Needling also help to stimulate cell turnover resulting in youthful looking skin.
KORA: How do you use it in your therapies?
Kylie: Being a skincare specialist for 20 years, Vitamin C has always been one of my hero products for myself and my clients. There are many products containing Vitamin C including cleansers, masks and moisturisers but I have found that using it in serum form gives the best results. Due to serums being a higher concentrate with smaller particles, they can penetrate on a cellular level to deliver obvious benefits in a shorter time.
I would recommend a small pea size amount two times a day morning and night, on cleansed skin, underneath your moisturiser.
KORA: How do we get collagen and elastin without applying it topically?
Kylie: It is proven that eating foods rich in Vitamin C can increase levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid, both are vital for the skin. Foods such as oranges, berries, tropical fruits, red and green capsicums, broccoli, sprouts, tomatoes and many more, are some of the ways we can get it in to our system to stimulate collagen and elastin, helping our skin cell turnover to speed up.
It is important to get a daily dose of Vitamin C, as it is water soluble, the body does not store it. Which is why when applied topically we need to repeat daily. Vitamin C supplements and fresh juices also add to daily requirements!
KORA: Can you spot a Vitamin C user?
Kylie: Absolutely. Clear Bright skin! Because Vitamin C is applied to the skin it encourages new collagen to grow and helps maintain the collagen they already have.
It is easier to spot someone that doesn’t! Someone that is not using Vitamin C topically, or internally, can result in connective tissue defect which includes rashes and acne—also depression and fatigue.
KORA: What would you say you love about it?
Kylie: It really works!
I love that it is so versatile and can be mixed with anything. I have had incredible results using Vitamin C daily in my skin care routine you can really see and feel the difference. My main concern was pigmentation. Working on board super yachts most my life, I was always chasing the sun, and the darks spots I had as a result have decreased dramatically due to using Vitamin C daily. I am also an allergy sufferer, so I take Vitamin C supplements twice a day to support my immune system to fight illness and healthy stress responses in my body. It really is a hero vitamin.
We agree Kylie! Thank you.
We’ve also asked regenerative and Reiki facialist, Nousha Salimi, her thoughts on Vitamin C.
KORA: What is the importance of Vitamin C for the skin?
Nousha: To give new radiance and life to one’s complexion.
Vitamin C acts as a barrier to free radicals which are the culprit to aging spots and fine lines. That’s why I believe it’s so important to apply Vitamin C prior to using a sunblock. This helps to maintain the integrity of skin’s cells, and aids in anti-aging.
KORA: How do we nourish collagen and elastin within our skin?
Nousha: Keeping up with a skin care routine is critical! Finding what nourishes you and brightens your skin. Starting with cleansers that won’t over dry you. I’m a huge fan of the Milky Mushroom Gentle Oil Cleanser. Then applying a high-quality Vitamin C serum to help with fine lines and wrinkles. And then sealing it all in with a yummy moisturizer. It does not need to be complex. It can be short, sweet yet most importantly, effective.
Ingesting bone broths, or foods with good quality collagen is so helpful to the skin. Luckily, we live in a day and age where there are fabulous supplements to take like the Noni Glow Skinfood Supplement. Proper massage techniques can also stimulate collagen! I have videos on my Instagram account on how I’ve done it with the Rose Quartz Heart Facial Sculptor.
And also by ingesting Vitamin C! I take 500mg orally of Vitamin C when I’m feeling a bit worn down.
KORA: How do you use it in your therapies?
Nousha: I use it for a last layer of treatment when I do my facials for firming and bringing warmth to the skin.
KORA: Can you post a Vitamin C user?
Nousha: Yes—minimal lines or brown spots and an all over glowing complexion!
KORA: What would you say you love about it?
Nousha: I love that it allows one to naturally combat the signs of aging. I love that it makes the skin feel tight and firm!
So do we Nouhsa! Thank you for your inspiring words.
