What Is Reiki?

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing modality. “Rei” means “God’s Wisdom or Higher Power” and Ki means “Life Force Energy” so reiki is “Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy.” The Ki in reiki is similar to the element of Chi in Chinese medicine or life-force energy. I like to tell people that a comparison is to think of how needles in Chinese acupuncture support bringing balance and harmony to the body. In reiki, instead of needles, we use our palm chakras.

The intention behind reiki at all times is to bring balance and harmony to the mind, body and spirit. Reiki is not a religion. It is a form of energy healing. Anyone can learn to work with reiki. It is a beautiful self-healing tool for achieving health, well-being, balance and spiritual fulfilment.

For those of you who may like the more science and evidence based approaches, my reiki master once told me, “Scientifically, Reiki is the bio-photon (light) emission conducted from one organic species to another. Reiki is from the light of lights and light is science. Reiki balances the recipient’s disturbances in their body’s bio-energy field.

As Albert Einstein told us back in the 1920’s, through his equation, everything, including our bodies, is composed of energy.” E=MC2: Einstein reminds us through this equation that everything, including our bodies, is composed of energy. So, yes, we get impacted by certain spaces we walk into or people we encounter. The feelings can be positive, neutral or negative. You yourself have an energy that is being put out into the world. We are all energy. Reiki works with our “energy body” or “energy field”. Everything on this planet has one. Reiki is a natural system of energy healing that uses directed Universal Life Force Energy to achieve healing on all levels of our being. This includes physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. It works with whatever you or the other person, place or thing needs most in this moment, for their highest good.

It’s actually quite fascinating when you really connect to this thought. Everything in life is, on a scientific level, made up of energy. Your body is made of energy. Everyone is energy. And, as energy, we have the ability to emit, shift, transmute and absorb energy as well. That is the beauty and power of reiki.

Reiki, being the essence of Universal Life Force Energy, has always existed. Reiki as a healing art is said to be discovered by a Japanese Monk named Dr. Mikao Usui (1865- 1926) in the early 1900’s. Recent studies have shown that prior to Usui Sensei’s work, there were at least four other styles of Reiki being practiced in Japan. Usui Sensei (aka Master or Teacher Usui) was a teacher and a devoted healer of the sick and suffering. He had a mystical experience on Mount Kurama in March of 1922, in which he was given the Reiki energy and thus developed his own style, calling it Usui Reiki. During his experience, he prayed for a way to heal people and to achieve spiritual enlightenment. Reiki was the answer to his prayers. On the 21st day of a 21 day meditation he received this powerful attunement. He trained many different students and over the years, reiki made its way to the west through a variety of different teachers, each one adapting the methods of Usui Sensei over time to meet the needs of the modern society.

For me, reiki came into my life at a time when I was experiencing very deep physical back pain and anxiety. I had never heard of it before but met someone who was a practitioner and they offered me a free session. I had no idea what to expect or how to arrive to the session, but once there and lying on the table, I felt my body and mind begin to relax in a way I wasn’t very familiar with in life. Each time I would book a session for myself, no matter how I felt going into the session, I always felt more balanced and relaxed afterwards.

That’s what is incredible about reiki, it is very different for each person depending on their needs and what is happening for them physically, mentally and emotionally at the time of connection. It can help support people in a state of physical pain, emotional turmoil or grievance, spiritual disconnect or for those seeking to enhance their connection to mind, body and spirit. The ways in which reiki can be utilized are countless and resolutely positive in their experiences. I now love to practice reiki on myself daily and even infuse its harmony and healing energy into my work projects, writing, speaking, teaching and community gatherings.

Now more than ever, reiki is a wonderful tool to help ease many forms of suffering. In my private client practice and my retreats and speaking engagements all over the world, I’ve watched students utilize the healing energy of reiki to help them in their life with chronic stress, anxiety, mental and physical suffering, pain, loss, fear, worry, doubt, insecurity, work and relationship issues among many other things. It is something we can all access and receive healing benefits from and each of us will know exactly how and when, intuitively, reiki is meant for us in our lives.
