A Guide To The Sacral Chakra

A Guide To The Sacral Chakra

Before we begin on the sacral chakra, I wanted to re-cap the chakra system as a whole. The chakra system is an integral part of energy healing. Eastern medicine believes that we all have seven chakras, which are the energetic centers of the body. Our chakras run in a straight light from the crown of our head, to the base of our spine (tailbone.)

The second chakra, is known as the sacral chakra. This chakra is about creativity and self-expression. The sacral chakra is located in the pelvic region. This chakra is associated with the color orange. It’s also connected with the water element; so it is connected with flowing, feeling, and movement.

  • Do you ever feel like you are carrying your (and others’ emotions) too much?
  • Do you feel easily drained or depleted?
  • Perhaps you deny yourself a vacation?
  • Perhaps you deny yourself that small piece of dessert?

When we are raised being denied pleasure, we often internalize this as adults, feeling that we are not worthy of enjoyment or the pleasurable things in life. These are clear signs that you’re in deep need of cleansing and balancing your sacral chakra.

How to unblock and open the sacral chakra to express yourself fully and reboot your creativity:

Think Orange

Orange is the color of the sacral chakra, so consuming orange foods such as curries, juices, and vegetables like sweet potato, can really assist in opening the flow of energy to the sacral chakra. Even wearing orange clothing, can energetically open and balance the sacral chakra as well.

Think Water

Water is the element associated with the sacral chakra. Immersing ourselves in water is known to be very cleansing for our physical body and our soul, especially our sacral chakra.

Ever taken your first dip in the salty ocean the first day of summer? You most probably experienced a powerful energetic cleanse, which helps reboot, recharge and realign the sacral chakra.

Staying hydrated is always a no-brainer, but think of drinking water as another practice in which you can rebalance and unblock your sacral chakra.

Think Creativity, Sensation, Emotion, Intimacy + Connection!

The sacral chakra is the chakra of pleasure + passion. It is where we connect with our physical body. Without touch, we become out of touch, Affirmations are powerful in balancing and opening all our chakras, and can really assist us in vibing high, clearing the fear, and restoring balance to our nervous system.

Consider writing down these below affirmations in your own handwriting, and then reciting several times out loud. Notice what comes up for you when you recite them. Are some affirmations more challenging to say than others?

Some affirmations to help open the sacral chakra are:

  • “I am a creative being.”
  • “I connect to my creativity, and allow my creativity to flow”
  • “I respect my physical body.”
  • “I embrace & celebrate my physical body.”
  • “I am worthy of pleasure, passion & enjoyment in my life.”
  • “I honor my feelings & emotions.”
  • “I am free to express myself in ways that feel right to me.”
  • “I allow my inner self to be seen & expressed.”

The Sacral Chakra In A Nutshell

The second chakra in the chakra system is our sacral chakra. It is the chakra of emotional awareness; feeling, emotions, connection, creativity, pleasure & passion.

Colour: Orange

Location: Just below our belly button/naval area; our womb space.

Element:  Associated with the water element.

Function: It relates to our emotional system, and our innate desires for pleasure, passion, connection, and creativity. The sacral chakra’s function is to direct us to pleasure. It reminds us to slow down, and remember that we are worthy and deserving of experiencing joy and pleasure in all areas of our life. The sacral chakra’s developmental stage is between the age of 6 months and 2 years.

What blocks/imbalances?  When we are feeling a block in our creativity or we feel there is an inability to feel pleasure, or passion, it is often a sign that our sacral chakra needs balancing.

How to unblock/balance?  By dancing, and moving the body. Womb cleansing or womb healing can also help to restore balance to the sacral chakra.  We can further unblock the sacral chakra by consuming orange food, curries, juices and smoothies (such as oranges, sweet potato, and earthy vegetables like potato, carrots, parsnips etc.) Yoga poses: such as Goddess pose, Triangle pose, Crescent Lunge, and Forward Bend, are powerful in balancing and opening the sacral chakra.

Crystals:  Orange Calcite, Orange Citrine, Sunstone.
