MK: How is Sakara Life different from other meal delivery services?

DD & WT:  We think of ourselves as so much more than a meal delivery service– we are on a mission to transform lives by providing the tools necessary for people to sit in the driver’s seat of their own health. These tools include our Signature Nutrition Program, functional products, Supplements, educational content through The Sakara Life Podcast and S Life Magazine, and more. At Sakara, our products and programs are optimally designed to support your health through healing and nourishing the gut by encouraging the growth of healthy bacteria in your microbiome (which also strengthens your overall immune system), keeping your blood sugar balanced, and flooding your body with phytonutrients and powerful polyphenols that support ageing. At Sakara, we want you to thrive and function optimally and do so in a sustainable, joyous, and healthy way. 

MK: What inspired you to create Sakara Life?

DD & WT: Sakara was created when Whitney and I hit our personal rock bottoms. I suffered from a lifetime of yo-yo dieting and Whitney struggled with severe cystic acne. I was studying medicine and working in a hospital and was inspired to study nutrition to help myself, Whitney, and all the patients I was seeing get to the root cause of disease rather than treating only the symptoms. In creating this food system for each other, we realized how transformative it was and decided we wanted to help other people transform their own lives through the power of food as medicine. From this, Sakara was born and we’ve made it our mission to help people understand the power of nourishment and abundance while listening and having reverence for your body and your plate.

MK: What practices have you adopted to reduce the environmental footprint and why is sustainability important to you?

DD & WT: Sustainability is one of Sakara’s strategic priorities as a company and something we are always thinking about and working on. While adopting a plant-based diet greatly reduces one’s carbon footprint, we also continue to focus on innovating with the most sustainable packaging options. Our current packaging is made from recycled water bottles — diverting 15 million plastic bottles from landfills in 2020. We have committed to becoming 100% recyclable, compostable or biodegradable when it comes to packaging by 2023. As part of this, we’re excited to be partnering with a sustainable packaging firm to undergo an exhaustive impact assessment of every piece of package we use).
