The Benefits of Dance for the Mind, Body & Soul

Dancing has always been a part of my life and as I get older, my relationship to dancing deepens. You don’t have to be a professional dancer to use dance as a release. You can do it anywhere, you don’t need any equipment, and there are so many health benefits!

Dancing for just 30 mins can burn more than 300 calories! That’s as much as an easy run or swim. When you dance, your heart rate goes up which improves cardiovascular health, increases stamina, and strengthens your bones and muscles. You release a lot of energy which in turn will help relax you and help you get a deeper, longer sleep.

So, put on your favorite song and give your body permission to move to the music. Don’t think about it, just do what feels good…Dancing has no rules which can help spark your artistic side improving your creativity!

Now let’s talk about what dance does for our mind….

Dance can be used as a tool of therapeutic expression and social anxiety therapy. While you are dancing around in your living room, your body releases endorphins into your bloodstream which makes us feel happy and relaxed! It also reduces levels of the stress hormone, cortisol which can help fight depression and anxiety.

And finally, we’ve all heard “Music soothes the soul!”. Music stimulates so many parts of the brain and emotions to a rate that it can lower blood pressure and heart rate. When music is combined with moving your body I truly believe our soul is at its happiest! So…..see ya on the dance floor!!
