Putting Your Pores Under The Spot Light

Your skin contains many openings through which sebum (oil) from the sebaceous glands come to the skin’s surface via the hair follicle and pores of the sudoriferous (sweat) glands. In an ideal world, the perspiration and sebum mix together in normal amounts to form a breathable barrier on the skin’s surface, naturally moisturizing and protecting it from the environment. But this is not always the case, and pores can easily become blocked. Once the pores become blocked, the skin’s function of breathing (exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide) is hindered, oil cannot be secreted, waste by-products cannot be excreted, moisture cannot be absorbed, and the acid mantel (pH) that naturally protects the skin is compromised. These factors can result in everything from a dull complexion to enlarged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and even severe acne.

“The acid mantle is a very fine, slightly acidic film on the surface of the skin acting as a barrier to bacteria, viruses and other potential contaminants that might penetrate the skin. It is secreted by sebaceous glands.”
