Your Skin's Natural Oils
Our sebaceous glands produce our natural oil called sebum. Sebum helps to keep our hair and skin moisturized and healthy. Beyond that is also helps to maintain our skin’s flexibility, and acts as a barrier to protect the skin from environmental aging and bacterial or fungal infections.
Over Producing Oil
When your skin is stripped of its natural oils, which can be caused by using harsh cleansers and soaps, it can result in an overproduction of sebum. This can result in dry, tight and sensitive skin, but also clogged pores which lead to pimples, blemishes, and blackheads.
Heightened hormones can also place a role in increasing sebum production, which is why during adolescence, menstrual cycles, pregnancy or menopause you may experience oilier skin.
Other lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, stress, medications and lack of water intake can also affect sebum production.
Should I use Oils if I have Oily Skin?
Most people with oily or oily / combination skin are usually afraid of face oils or any oils, thinking that it would make their complexion worse, but this just isn’t the case. How Often to Use Oils
If you have dry skin, you might use an oil day and night. If you have combination or oily skin, you might want to use an oil once a day and preferably at night when our skin produces less sebum. It’s always best to test and see what works best for your skin.
