Q. What is stressed skin?
A. Stressed skin can appear in a handful of ways – from breakouts to inflammation to signs of premature aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, dull skin etc. This happens when your skin is acting out of balance and not behaving the way healthy, properly treated and properly cared for skin should. When your skin is properly cared for it’s firm, healthy and glowing with a luminous, even skin tone.
Q. How do you determine if your client’s skin is stressed out?
A. I speak to all my clients about their lifestyle habits, which is a great indicator to the root cause of their skins current condition. We then discuss their current skin care regimen and make sure the skin is being cared for and protected properly at home. Mental and environmental stressors will always wreak havoc in and on your skin, which is why it is so important to talk to a professional about your skincare routine so they can help you incorporate the right products with the right ingredients for your skin specifically in order to maintain healthy, radiant skin.
Q. What are the signs of stressed skin?
A. Dullness, dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles, acne, inflammation and redness are the most obvious signs that someone’s skin is stressed. It’s very important to pick up on these cues because this is your body signaling that something is out of balance. If you don’t have a properly balanced regimen, the skin can begin to look dull, dehydrated and lifeless and fine lines and wrinkles will appear far more apparent. It’s also very common for cystic breakouts and redness to appear more frequently and more severe during high stress times.
Q. How can you determine if skin concerns are being caused by stress?
A. If you’re experiencing a flare up and haven’t changed anything in your day-to-day routine, your eating habits, and haven’t incorporated any new skincare products, it’s highly likely that stress and anxiety are a key factor. Everything ties back to lifestyle and the signs of stressed skin. Environmental stress can cause the overall texture and tone of the skin to be off and start to look lifeless and dull, while mental stress can increase your skin’s oil production, leading to break outs.
Q. What happens to someone’s skin when stress levels increase?
A. When you’re stressed out, (and this is very prevalent in women), your baseline hormone balance can be thrown off. When your tense and there is a change in hormone balance, your body releases a stress hormone called cortisol, which may increase the skin’s oil production, clogging the pores and making you more vulnerable to breakouts.
Q. How do you recommend treating stressed skin?
A. It’s extremely important to use products that will protect your skin from daily environmental stressors such as the sun and pollution. Having a clean canvas is so important and I recommend the Cream Cleanser for maintaining the skin’s healthy barrier to avoid stripping stressed skin. The Noni Bright Vitamin C Serum is also amazing, because it’s loaded with antioxidants to protect against environmental damage that can lead to premature aging and stressed skin. Last, but not least I recommend the Noni Glow Face Oil for nourishing the skin with antioxidant protection and essential fatty acids to provide a deep boost of hydration for a supple and silky finish.
My name is Sharlena Hassani and I am a licensed esthetician in Beverly Hills. My purpose as an esthetician is to spread my knowledge about skincare so my clients can achieve and maintain healthy, clear and youthful skin!
I spent years trying to figure out how to gain control over my own skin. Struggling with acne and pigmentation, I tried and spent thousands on every product imaginable, went to multiple skincare specialists (e.g. estheticians, dermatologists) trying to achieve the beautiful clarity and glow that every person wants from their skin. Some products worked slightly, but nothing made a lasting, long-term difference that I so desperately sought. I decided to take matters into my own hands and my passion for skincare started! I studied ingredients and cosmetic chemistry to figure out the connection between specific substances and how the skin functions on a day-to-day basis. Doing so has not only allowed me to finally have complete control over my skin, but to know exactly what it takes to maintain clear, youthful and glowing skin for each unique skin type!
Everybody deserves to be comfortable and confident in their own skin – it is my goal to help each client achieve that clarity.
