Miranda has always used aromatherapy as a tool in her daily life to shift or rebalance energy and the mind. Recently we launched aromatherapy diffusers to our Miranda Loves collection, so we caught up with Shea from The Goodnight Co who answered all our questions on aromatherapy and the benefits it can bring to our lives.
Q. WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY?
Shea: Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils and other plant aromatics to bring about physiological and emotional changes. The use of essential oils in aromatherapy has been in existence for over 6,000 decades. There are many different ways to use essential oils, but one of the most popular methods is by using a few drops in an Oil Diffuser – something I love to do daily for the energy in my home, and workplace.
Q. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AROMATHERAPY?
Shea: The beauty of working with essential oils is that they can be used to treat a range of illnesses and conditions from insomnia to headaches. In fact – essential oils have become fundamental for alternative and holistic medicine. Some people wonder why you might use essential oils when there are already other, more mainstream methods of addressing certain issues, however establishing the use of essential oils as a habit in your ordinary life will help you take some time for yourself, and can even help you with your overall health and wellbeing.
Q. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AN ULTRASONIC DIFFUSER?
Shea: Ultrasonic Diffusers allow the mist to be delivered through vibrations, with. This process allows the oils to be safely diffused without any heat involved, making it the safer choice for your home than candles or incense, particularly if you have small children or pets.
Q. WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO PUT A DIFFUSER ON?
Shea: I always have an Essential Oil Diffuser on. I like to put mine on as soon as I can, whether it’s in my home or as soon as I get into the office.
Q. THE BEST PLACES TO POSITION DIFFUSERS AROUND THE HOME?
Shea: Every room in the house! It’s great to be able to enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy no matter where you are, in the kitchen, traditionally the heart of every home in the morning to refresh our morning energy, besides your work space to stay calm throughout the day, or in your bedroom in night to prepare you for a great nights rest. There’s no reason to be concerned about the diffuser being too close or too far away, however you will benefit most if your doors and windows are closed.
Q. HOW LONG SHOULD YOU RUN A DIFFUSER? CAN YOU LEAVE ON OVERNIGHT?
Shea: Diffusers can run as long as you like! I have a diffuser on constantly throughout the day. Some diffusers have a timer, where you can set the diffuser to switch off after a specific time period. This is perfect for when you’re sleeping as you can benefit from your essential oils as you’re falling asleep and it can automatically turn off through the night.
Q. DO YOU NEED TO CLEAN YOUR DIFFUSER?
Shea: Yes, if you’re using your diffuser every day, you should be spot cleaning with every use and doing a deep clean at least once a month. You can easily do this by wiping down each part of your diffuser. You can also add a teaspoon of white vinegar into the diffuser and let it run so it can thoroughly clean any leftover essential oil residue.
Q. IS IT BENEFICIAL TO CREATE A ROUTINE WITH AROMATHERAPY?
Shea: Aromatherapy is part of every aspect in my daily routine. This is from when I wake up in the morning, when I’m at the office and when I’m preparing for bed. Not only do essential oils make any space smell fresh and alive, you’re able to benefit without thinking too much about it. Whether you need to calm your space, refocus or relax, essential oils can improve your mood and rebalance energy levels all in one.
Q. WHAT ESSENTIAL OILS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR SLEEP AND STRESS?
Shea: Essential Oils can do wonders for your sleep and stress levels. Some of my favourites include Lavender, Cedarwood, Clary Sage and Sandalwood.
Lavender essential oil is one of the most popular and versatile essential oils used in aromatherapy. The oil promotes relaxation and is most effective in treating anxiety and for promotion feelings of calm. Lavender is known as the sleepy scent, so is best used at night to prepare your body for a restful sleep, so we have this in our Goodnight Essential Oil.
Cedarwood Essential Oil helps to relax the body, enhance concentration, decrease hyperactivity, reduce harmful stress, ease tension, clear the mind, and last but not least encourage the onset of quality sleep.
Sandalwood Essential Oil promotes emotional well-being by dissipating tense feelings. This versatile oil is particularly useful for enhancing mood and providing uplifting feelings, useful at any time of the day.
Clary Sage Essential Oil is known as one of the most relaxing essential oils. When used in aromatherapy, this oil can help alleviate stress by inducing a sense of well-being and promotes feelings of relaxation when preparing for sleep.
